Junghans Pilot Chronoscope - 27/3493.00

Born from a proud aviation heritage, the Junghans Pilot Chronoscope (ref. 27/3493.00) is a pilot's chronograph built for adventure. Its domed dark grey dial, finished in a matt effect lacquer and signed with historical Junghans lettering, features hour numerals and a minute track with beige luminous substance, beige-lacquered counters and polished hands for outstanding legibility in any light.

The self-winding J880.3 caliber drives the stop function, 30-minute counter and small seconds, with up to 42 hours of power reserve when the chronograph is not running. An ergonomically designed bi-directional turning bezel with a luminous dot offers excellent grip, the polished 43.3mm stainless steel case is water resistant to 10 bar, and the seven-screw case back carries an "Aviation" engraving. With a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a vintage-style riveted brown and black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle, this automatic pilot watch is ready for takeoff.

Timepiece History

Junghans traces its roots to 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law set up a workshop in Schramberg, in Germany's Black Forest, to make components for clocks, and the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had become the world's largest watch factory, and in 1918 Arthur Junghans completed the nine-tier Terrassenbau, a terraced factory designed to bring daylight to every workplace that now houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans still crafts its watches in Schramberg.

Junghans has built watches for pilots for more than 100 years, including for the German Imperial Army Air Service and the Zeppelin airships, and in the 1930s it was manufacturing control panel instruments for aeroplanes and airships. In the 1940s it developed the J88 hand-wound chronograph, which won the contract to equip the newly formed Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, with pilot watches and was produced from 1950 to 1964. The Pilot Chronoscope carries that legacy forward, down to a bi-directional bezel modeled on its historical predecessor.
